Inspiration & Perspiration: Deepak Chopra & the Divine Feminine at the Women’s Conference

Here it is Monday November 1 already, Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead. Did it feel to you like October flew past in a blur? I know it did for me as I was busy getting ready for and then attending the Women’s Conference.

Last Monday, I was at the Terrace Theater at the Long Beach Convention Center surrounded by thousands of women –yes mostly women, and literally thousands of them. That’s because I was at the sold out Governor’s Women’s Conference which Maria Shriver hosts for 10,000 women–and where I spoke later that day.

Because of some complications, I wasn’t able to get in in time to hear First Lady Maria Shriver. And I’m really disappointed I missed Her Holiness Shinso Ito, Head of The Shinnyo Sangha in Japan because I was called to a rehearsal for the Style Network “How Do I Look” makeover.

But I did hear Deepak Chopra, and I was able to take some notes on my laptop until I had to run off (I even took off my shoes to run!)

To celebrate solstice, inspiration from “Summer Day” by Mary Oliver

Today is the first day of summer in the northern hemisphere and the first day of winter in the southern. Since I live in the north, I am celebrating the longest day and the shortest night!

Today is also the first day of my summer school class. At the top of my syllabus, I quote the last two lines of Mary Oliver’s poem “The Summer Day” and I pass out a copy of the poem as well.

For your enjoyment, I am now passing it along to you. Please tell me what you plan to do with your own wild and precious life!

“The Summer Day”

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean–
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down–
who is gazing around with her enourmous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I’ve been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

One of the benefits of holding The Write Alley’s monthly blogging and social media workshops at Ventura’s Bell Arts Factory is the venue itself.

Pictured is the famous French diarist and erotic author Anais Nin in a bank vault with her many journals. These were subsequently published as a series of diaries and which she mined for a number of books.

Starting today June 1, we intend to post on this site every day, Monday through Friday. We want to offer an eclectic mix of  ideas, tips, links, and writing prompts which will help you as a writer, as a small business owner, or as an individual seeking to connect with his or her creativity–words that inspire you to put in the perspiration it might take to taste life twice. That’s why today’s post is the first in a series of quotes under the title “Inspiration & Perspiration.”
