March 8 is International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. The first IWD event was held one hundred years ago, in 1911. According to the International Women’s Day site, it began when women’s oppression and inequality spurred women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change. In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.
IWD is now an official holida
y in China, Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. In some countries IWD has the equivalent status of Mother’s Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.

For me, International Woman’s Day means I will be working on “Message in a Bottle: Ocean to Ojai” with the fabulous women at Knead Baking Company in Ojai as well as Danika Dinsmore, my co-conspirator on this project. You can learn more about it on our facebook page and register for “Message in A Bottle: Ocean to Ojai–Whales, Wines, Words” here.
I’m also going to connect with Sequoia Hamilton, one of three masterminds for Ojai WordFest; she and I will be attending the Ojai Women’s Business Social at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.
While the Social goes from 6-8pm at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club, 409 S. Fox Street, Ojai, I’ll be scooting out early to catch poetry by Ojai’s Polly Bee who is reading at the Artists Union Gallery in Ventura. I’m planning on reading something from my new book in the open mic which follows the feature. This is where I’ll be featuring on 3/15.
It also means that if I get all my work done like a good girl, I’ll celebrate with some time for myself and go get a manicure and a pedicure!
So for this week’s edition of Tuesday’s Tips, I say celebrate International Women’s Day by doing something nice for yourself and by networking with women you want to work with!
